All wooded areas, coniferous or deciduous, provide good hunting grounds in season. Prime sites can be found in Cook's Copse in the woods on the ridges and along the Nuthurst Stream. All these places are accessible along public footpaths. Old well-established lawns and verges also have their specialties. Nuthurst and Maplehurst seem to abound in these.

Although most fungi fruit in the autumn there is always something about at any season - even at bluebell time!

First here are some notes on particular species of interest, together with links to photographs on my personal web-site www.js.clara.net. Then follows a full list of tentatively identified species from the parish. There are photographs of most of them on my site too. If you would like to put me right on any point of detail or want to discuss any of this please e-mail me at JS@clara.net

Finally, the usual disclaimer:

Even though I may suggest that a particular species is edible, please do not try it yourself unless you are sure of the identification . Check in a book or with an expert. I  take no responsibility for any consequent gastric problems.
